Appearances/Disappearances 1999
Concerned with beauty and mind, my artistic exploration is driven by the effect inner energy and light has on the development of a human being.
My work has been filtered through my own personal experience. When I was a year old, I became partially paralyzed and was confined to my bed for two years. The experience of being bedridden affected my sight and perception; everything I saw and sensed seemed distorted. My mind and hand were experiencing a dichotomy: to survive, my hand connected to my subconscious instead. With this series of images, I represent the abstract, mathematical calculations linking the conscious and subconscious by recording the actual movement of a computer mouse onto photographic paper.
In Apparences & Des-Apparences (Appearances & Dis-Apprearances), which I created in Barcelona in 1999, I rephotographed portraits rendered with distortions and experimented with a photographic device to print the images on thermal paper. I then installed them behind an abstract drawing featuring black shapes and lines created from hand movements recorded with a computer mouse, calculated by special software, and then silk-screened onto a transparent material. The thermal paper portraits were scanned and blown up in order to be seen through the abstract piece.
