ORPHICORUM FRAGMENTA

Fragmentos Orficos is a self-portrait video installation that uses the psychologically disturbed underpinnings of the myth of Orpheus to explore developmental psychology. The video molds the narrative of Orpheus into a viscerally manic experience of phantom images filtered through the lens of a broken camera and with ineffable sounds to portray existential struggle, psychological trauma, and emotional transformation.

Orpheus’ journey to hell and its tragic consequences result from the discovery of his own fears, here confronting the work of psychologists Alice Miller and Bruno Bettelheim, both of whom examine the experience of childhood. Miller and Bettelheim posit that emotional discovery and acceptance are built on the unique history of our buried youth. By reaching into my subconscious and tapping into these roots that thrive beneath the surface of alienation and dissimulation, Fragmentos Orificos symbolizes the passage into our own underworld and ventures toward the true emotional state.

Fragmentos Orificos investigates this mythology to further understand the limits of the psyche, with hell represented as the deep chambers of the mind, the house of our immortal soul, as believed in Orphism. A soul that can be rewarded or punished, while the body serves as a temporary vessel.
