It’s Not My Fault 2003
It’s Not My Fault is a video that portrays images of nationalism, religion, and warfare juxtaposed with elements of overt sarcasm to highlight the absurdity—and the danger—of denial.
For its creation I collected film segments that epitomize the abuse of power and the negligence of human life. Throughout the piece irony is a tool for observation collaging dozens of fragments of confronted politicians employing the same message as a justification to center attention on an act of terrorism, while failing to acknowledge the plight of the other.
The project started in 2001 in New York when these words foreshadowed the terrorists’ attacks of 9/11 and the ensuing media storm centering on the victimization of America, spreading the message of denied responsibility: each person acts in isolation and is absolved of any “faults.”
The piece directly confronts the human tendency to deny responsibility. Trademarked by world leaders and abused by dictators throughout history, the term “it’s not my fault” exemplifies the role of blame as the ultimate differentiator between the self and the other.
PHOTOS
I took these photos during the 9/11 attacks in NY. I was in the city and I saw everything unwrapping in front of my eyes and it was such a strong experience that transported me immediately to the emotions of Chilean 9/11 of 73 when I was still a child. This lead me to take part in many activities to help the people affected by these events.
